DIY: Hand Painting a Rug

Monday, June 25, 2012

Howdy, y’all! I’m Lindsay from Living With Lindsay. I run a DIY/Home Decorating blog where I showcase all of the crazy things I do around my house. Sweet Kristin (who was my sister’s college roommate!) asked if I could show you guys a little somethin’-somethin’ while she was off tending to the new baby. Naturally, I was happy to take over today.

I know that you guys are the most fashiony fashionables around. I, am on the other hand, am not. I always get Kristin’s advice when I need to do something like buy new boots or pull a wardrobe for an on-camera appearance. The large majority of my clothing is splattered with paint, so I panic when I have to look stylish.

Luckily, I do know a bit about creating a stylish home. I spend my days painting, but it’s very rarely my nails. I paint walls, furniture, picture frames and murals. But these days, one of my favorite things to paint is rugs. They are so easy to customize and you can make a big statement with just a little time investment.

I like to paint sisal or jute rugs, as the paint adheres nicely to the thick fibers. Ikea and Cost Plus/World Market are good places to find them. I generally get mine at World Market so I don’t get lost for 2 hours in Ikea.

World Market

You can either purchase a stencil, create one yourself using Contact paper or just use painter’s tape to lay out a geometric design. Recently, I cut out a design to use on a rug for my newly redecorated powder room.

I applied the sticky side of the vinyl to the rug and used a foam brush to dab craft paint onto the rug. It took me about thirty minutes from start to finish to paint a small 2 x 3 rug.

The visual impact is huge, while the financial impact to my checking account was negligible. I’ve done larger rugs with more intricate patterns, but in the end, the concept is the same.

I love this idea! I saw something similar on Pinterest with a large area rug. Probably better to start small though! :)
