Ever get that feeling where you are just itchin’ to get away? Well, that’s just what Floyd and I did last weekend when he surprised me with a mini-road trip up to Pennsylvania to see Frank Lloyd Wright’s ‘Fallingwater’ house in the Allegheny Mountains. This house has been calling to me for years and finally we made the trek to see this architectural masterpiece.
What really moved me about this place was how it was designed to blend into the surrounding nature, a style called Organic Architecture. You can see from Floyd’s photos how the water runs right under the house and the structure is built into the mountain itself. Truly amazing. They didn’t let us take pictures inside, but the decor was equally impressive as it also seemed to blend in with its surroundings. Built in the 1930′s, Wright was truly ahead of his time.
I was definitely thinking about how I could incorporate more nature in my own decorating!
Fallingwater is about 4 hours away from Annapolis in a pretty rural area, so we hit the road on Saturday and Floyd had made arrangements for us to stay at the Paddler’s Lane Bed and Breakfast. While charming, we definitely got a taste for country life as we might have had a bit of a “bat incident”. Just as we were settling into a good ol’ game of Monopoly by the fireplace, a dark winged creature flew over my head. I of course freaked out “city style” and dove for the ground scattering pieces everywhere. Luckily Floyd remained calm and managed to capture and release the bat outside. We had a good laugh afterward and let the good times continue. I mean, now we have a great side story about our adventure! Oh, and it was a train town so trains were just constantly passing through. I actually loved the trains and was constantly trying to run and pose in front of them. I’m sure those conductors got a chuckle!
I can’t wait for my next weekend adventure! Any good suggestions?

Love this home! I live by Frank Lloyd Wright’s home and studio where he drafted his ideas for many other homes, buildings, and furnishings. He was a pretty amazing man, and definitely ahead of this time- I still don’t think many architects are able to do what he accomplished!

I’ve heard about this house! And I’m glad to hear it’s as beautiful in person as it is in photos!

I love that house, the architecture is just amazing.
Whenever you come back down to FL, you should go to Lakeland and see his contributions at Florida Southern College, there are some great buildings designed by him!

It blows me away that Fallingwater was built in the ’30s! Ahead of his time, indeed.

What an awesome getaway! That Floyd …. how romantic. I’ve always wanted to see Fallingwater, so I’m thinking it’s time to make the trek.
I know you’re a book lover, so if you’re interested in reading more about Wright, I suggest the novel “Loving Frank.” It’s fiction, but based on the love story between him and his mistress. I enjoyed it.

I grew up in the country but am definitely a city girl. Maybe that is why I moved away! LOL
Though I do miss the country sometimes. Especially the quiet and wide open spaces.
Looks like a lovely place!

My Uncle painted a picture of that house when he was in college and it hung in my grandparents house until they passed away.
Always been intrigued by the house and the stories surrounding it.

I’ve only ever been to the parking lot of Falling Water. My parents took us there once when we were kids. You have to be 10 years old to go in (I’m not sure of the age, I just know I was not that old and it seemed like a ridiculous restriction). So I’ve still never been in there!

OMGAWSH, I fell in love with this place when I learned about Frank Lloyd Wright in my Art class last semester. I’m jealous! I would love to see this in person one day.

You look so cute! I’m from PA and have been wanting to visit Falling Water for so long! I’ll put it on my list for when I’m back in the US!

Oh wow, this place looks incredible! It really looks so beautiful. Lucky you!

They didn’t let you take pictures inside? They were okay with it when I went 5 years ago. Times are a changin’. It’s so gorgeous there, I just loved it – totally loved the guest house too – I had no idea it was there until I visited. I didn’t get to poke around the area much since I lived just 2 hours away in Cumberland at the time. Did you go to the gift shop? That was awesome too – lol!!

I’ve always wanted to visit Falling Water! There’s actually a Frank Lloyd Wright House in New Hampshire that my boyfriend and I were talking about going to see on Sunday. It’s only an hour or so away. I’m a huge architecture nerd, so I can’t wait!
