Making Sushi…I now know why the good stuff will cost ya!

Tuesday, August 31, 2010

Last week I dragged Floyd to his first cooking class. It was at local DC school Culin Aerie, which I had been to one time before. Living Social is a daily email of deals and coupons I get for the DC area and they sent a BOGO for a sushi making class.  Knowing how much Floyd loves sushi I thought this would be a good starter class for a guy not super into cooking.  Turns out I was right!  We had a blast sipping wine while mastering the art of the sushi roll!   The wine explains the mediocre pics below (sorry!) and we quickly realized why the art of sushi takes a skilled chef.  The rice is beyond sticky!  It stuck to our fingers, hands, table, anything it touched.  It was like the super glue of rice!  We laughed as we tried to julienne veggies and slice avocado and overall had a great time leaving with full bellies and a new appreciation for one of our favorite dishes.  And while I’m not sure I will be making this at home anytime soon, I do highly recommend a cooking class date night!  Très romantique!

Yummm, that looks wonderful! :) What a fun and creative date idea – I’ve never tried to make sushi before and I’ve never been to a cooking class, so it sounds like a win-win! :)

We love sushi and sometimes make it at home. It doesn’t look as nice as the professionals, but it tastes great!

Looks like a fun class. :)

There’s a bit of an art to making sushi well…one day I’m going to do a class & learn properly, the few times I’ve tried I failed miserably!

Megan, Goodness! What a fun date night! My hubby is from Hawaii (yay! we will be there at the end of this month!), so I had sushi many, many moons ago when we first were married (28+ years ago!), before you were able to get sushi at the grocery stores or were able to find that Japanese restaurant, except for a big city outside of Hawaii and California…
& then after returning back to our home in New Mexico and wanting some sushi, but realizing I didnt have the little mat to roll them up in (& a wee bit impatient to wait til family sent one in the mail :o )…I actually found some bamboo skewers and made my own mat with them and crochet thread! haha

Blessings & Aloha!

We were just talking about this the other day at work (trying to decide how difficult it would be to do at home). I think my main problem would be figuring out how to cut everything (like the avocado) to get it to sit in the sushi correctly!

They look great! I went to a cooking class at the Melting Pot for a date night and it was a blast! I think doing something new together is the best way to reconnect. :)
